On the bulletin board above my desk, I keep a handful of quotes that have taught me something, or that I hope to learn from.

Here's one:

Some work on most days.

—Nina LaCour

While taking LaCour's writing course, The Slow Novel Lab, she repeated this mantra many times. Some work. Most days. That's all it takes to keep yourself moving forward.

I like to apply this to my writing practice in general. "Some work" doesn't necessarily mean I'm working on a particular project. Sometimes all I've got is energy for the newsletter, or this blog, or just my private journal. That's okay. It's still work. It still keeps me warm, and ready for the next time.
