Quote wall: Kazuo Ishiguro
On the bulletin board above my desk, I keep a handful of quotes that have taught me something, or that I hope to learn from.
Here's one:
...a feeling that someone or other disapproved of me, and was only just managing to conceal it. Curiously, these moments tended to occur in the company of the very people whom I might have expected to be most appreciative of my achievements.
—Kazuo Ishiguro, When We Were Orphans
Ishiguro is one of my favorite authors. His work can often feel chilly, but then he'll slip right in beneath the skin and make an observation like this. As someone who has struggled with needing the validation of others, this little character note was fiercely hot.
