Oscam's razor
As I write this, Squish is in the next room, watching her latest favorite cartoon (Summer Camp Island). Two characters in the show have incorrectly deduced that another character is being tortured, so attempt to rescue her. They discover, however, that the character in question is just homesick, and is just being pampered by friends.
"Ohhhh," said the character named Oscar. "Oscam's razor."
I got pretty excited, and said, "Squish, do you know what he's talking about here?"
She looked at me with flat eyes. "The simplest explanation is usually the true one, Daddy, I know."
"Oh. Okay." Then I said, "But you know that in the real world that's called Occam's razor, right?"
"It's probably just because Oscar said it, Daddy. I know."
"Oh. Okay."
Squish kept looking at me, waiting for the next interruptive Dad thing I had to say. I think she could tell there was one last thing.
"Occam's razor is a big theme in Contact," I offered, perhaps a little weakly. "That's—"
"Daddy. Your favorite movie. I know."
"All right," I said. "All right. You know. Carry on."
Summer Camp Island is a delightful little show, by the way.
